Every lens can use some extra protection. It is always a good idea to have a UV or clear crystal filter on every lens. This will keep your lens scratch-free for many years.

 

The only important measurement here is the diameter of the filter so that it fits your lens. Most of the "kit camera" lenses are either 52mm, 58mm, 62mm or 67mm.

Another very useful filter is a circular polarizing filter. This filter helps saturating color, removes reflections and darkens the sky. Its effects are not entirely replicable digitally as there is no way to remove reflections digitally other than painstakingly retouching a photograph.
